In February 2026, we explored Athens, Greece, from Eindhoven, Netherlands, with a direct flight. We experienced local food, local markets, island trips by cruise and different architectural marvels, as the weather was pleasant during our six-day stay in this city. Here are some key takeaways from our trip to keep in mind on your next visit to this city.
Parthenon – Acropolis

The Parthenon is situated above the city, atop the Acropolis. You need to book the tickets and climb up. You can have a nice view of the city from this place. If you are accompanying the specially abled people or elderly people who can’t climb or walk, you can use the lift which was built in recent years. But you have to check the availability, as they keep it shut down in adverse weather conditions.

Hydra-Poros-Agina
The Athens day cruise trip to three islands was the main attraction. Luckily we managed to get tickets with the help of the hotel team, as the weather was not good. Hydra is the most beautiful among them. We tried local food, shopping places and explored nearby touristic places like the monastery.

Also cruise food for lunch is good. The evening band is memorable.
Explore Frugally
Must-read to travel frugally by tram/bus.
If you want to go to selective places and don’t want to use the hop-on and hop-off bus, then the best deal is to go for the “Tram“, as it is a lot cheaper than other options to travel around the city. You can use a single credit card punch to go from one end to another end, but it is a bit slow. In general, the taxi fare is comparatively lower than the fare in the Netherlands.

Place to Stay

This is a very important aspect of every trip. Because it should suit your preferences. We choose a place which is within walking distance of the seashore and a small local market. Also, hotel service is very helpful with local news updates, like there was a taxi strike for 3 days, and they informed us in time so that we planned accordingly for the Parthenon.

Local Food
Gyros is one of the famous Greek street foods with different toppings like cheese, chicken, etc. You can find it in most restaurants at an affordable price. Also, you can use the food delivery app, WOLT, to try out local food from different corners of the city.

Marina Site

Greece is known as a critical maritime gateway to Europe because of its strategic location with major parts like Asia, Africa and Europe. We found many marine sites during our morning and evening walk.
