Nature is the best teacher to human beings. It eases stress and helping us to relax and adopt a positive attitude. And flowers are nature’s expression of care & love. An attempt to list some of them from our garden and outside while exploring a (new) city. During compilation of this, We came to know the names of flowers, its origin, bloom period and other characteristics like one flower named after Asian leader, one species live up to more than 100 years, etc. You must have seen some of them but do you know their names?

Dandelion:

This flower type is featured in Samsung Mobile Handsets, which disperse with a soothing breeze. The initial version of this is yellow flower heads, which are widely seen around us, that turn into round balls of many silver tufted fruits that disperse in the wind.

Crocus:

Native to south Europe, middle east and china. It is a low growing plant and has different shades like white, blue, purple and orange. It blooms during late winter-early spring. The seed, bulb, flower is used to make medicine, but all parts are considered toxic.

East Asian Cherry(Japanese cherry):

Native to Japan, China and Korea. It blooms between mid to late spring. It gets covered with abundant and beautiful, pink white, semi-double flowers, which are among the largest of the flowering cherries. It exudes a pleasant almond fragrance. During Summer, leaves come out dense after fall of beautiful flowers.

White Ginger Lily:

Native to Sub-tropical and tropical region of Asia, India. It has intense and inviting fragrance but also elegant shape with soft texture. It blooms during spring and need direct sun light.

Day Lily:

Native to Asia. The blooming period occurs during mid-summer and lasts about a month. Each flower lasts only a single day, hence the common name. It grows outside the home and can be found in different shades like orange, yellow etc.

Easter Lily:

Native to Taiwan and Ryuku Islands. The white lily symbolises purity, rebirth, new beginnings and hope. Most often associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ as observed on Easters. It grows well in bright and indirect sun light inside the home. Blooming period occurs during spring (i.e. not-too-cold and not-too-hot temperatures)

Hibiscus:

Native to warm temperature, sub-tropical and tropical region like India. The genus is quite large, comprising several hundred species with different shades and types. Available in different colours and mix varieties.

Champak:

Native to sub-tropical and tropical regions like India. It is an ever-green tree with fragrant flowers. It blooms during spring to summer. It grows best in morning sun and afternoon shade. Tree branches are very delicate in nature & usually tall trees.

Magnolia:

Native to China and Japan. It has a large genus of about 210 to 340 flowering plant species. There are different shades of Chinese Magnolia flower like white, pink and purple. Bloom during Spring (i.e. early feb to late march). Varieties include Chinese magnolia, star magnolia and magnolia liliiflora. Dense leaves come out in summer.

Yasino Cherry:

Native to Japan. It is a hybrid cherry between Prunus speciosa as father plant and Prunus pendula f. ascendens as mother. It blooms during spring(March-April). You can find this tree in city parks or road-side. Flowers are mostly pure white colour.

Orchid:

Native to east indies and Australia. Widely cultivated and use as decorative plant as delight to eyes. Available in different shades (like single colour and mix colour).

Daffodil:

Native to Europe. This plant grows from a bulb and comes back year after year. It blooms during late winter to early spring(Jan-Feb). It has different shades like yellow, white, mix colour etc. Max height is up to 120cm.

Rhododendron:

Native to eastern Asia and Himalayan. This plant has a large genus of about 1,024 species. This plant can be evergreen unlike other plants. It blooms between late March and late June. Available in different colour like: Purple, Pink, White, Red and hybrid colours. Flowers come in bunches like a bouquet.

Lilac:

Native to south east Europe, some part of Britain and eastern Asia. Available in different shades like purple, pink and white. It blooms between late spring to early summer. It has an intense fragrance and is usually apparent on warm, sunny days.

Wisteria:

Native to China, Japan and Korea, Vietnam, North Iran. It is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family. It symbolises long life and immortality. It blooms under sun or partial shade during mid-to-late spring. Green leaves come out in summer. These plants can live up to 100 years and more. In Japan, there is an wisteria tree of 1200 years old.

Native to Europe. It blooms between mid-May to June (i.e., spring to early summer). Hanging flower petals in yellow color is main attraction of this.

Native to South America, India. Semi-evergreen Plant. Available in different colours and types. It is known as Radha-tamal in Odisha, India.

Hydrangea:

Native to eastern Asia, china, japan and Korea. This plant has a genus of over 75 species of flowering plants. It blooms during the summer. Also, partial shade is the ideal condition for it. One with white colour is known as smooth Hydrangea, while the one with pink & blue colour is known as French Hydrangea.

Hollyhock:

Native to Southwestern china. It blooms during the summer. It has different shades. It belongs to plant family Malvaceae. It is neither a low growing plant nor a plant with dense leaves. But bit delicate in nature.

Native to Southeastern US. It is an evergreen plant in horticulture for its architectural qualities. It blooms between early-mid summer.

Philadelphus:

Native to North America, Central America, Asia and in southeast Europe. It blooms between late spring to early summer. Varieties include philadelphus virginaalis, philadelphus coronarius and philadelphus Lemoinei. This can grow up to some meters in height with dense leaves.

Native to the Americas from southern Canada to northern Argentina, including the West Indies. Plants prefer partial sun. Bloom time is during mid-spring to early summer.

Himalayan CransBill ( Geranium himalayense):

Native to West Himalaya, Afghanistan, Kirgizstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Tadzhikistan, Tibet, and Uzbekistan. It is capable of enduring flowers in difficult conditions. Bloom time is during Summer. It spreads in broad spaces with a maximum height up to 60cm.

Kimjongilia:

Native to North-Korea and named after late North-korean leader Kim Jong-il. It blooms during the summer in shadow. It looks like a rose flower from a distance, but the flower has a different texture. It has different shades like red, pink, etc.

Ivy geranium:

Blooms in full sun to partial shade during summer and preferable place is hanging basket. Available in different shades.
